Is the rebirth of the mixtape imminent?

My first reaction was to roll my eyes at this article. However, I think the cassette is an underrated way to listen to music. It forces you to listen to all the music consecutively as the producer or the band intended.

The world is a cesspool…maybe…depending on how you look at it.

I’m not usually one to sit back and take stock in things. I am fortunate in that I have a job I like doing, and I’m not just waiting to retire. I’ve been working for over 20 years, and I gauge I have between 20-25 years before I can’t do it as well as I would like anymore. We’ll see.

Anyway, my point is that I’m not really looking forward or planning for a anything other than financially. Throughout most of my life, I have always had a 3-, 5-, 10-year plan. Now, I just don’t. I’m reveling in my present, and it feels really good. I can’t remember where I read it, so allow me to paraphrase. When you set goals for yourself, you are failing up until the point you reach your goal.

Demoralizing. Isn’t it?

I feel that way about the rage culture we currently live in. A lot of people are so focused on the end goal: peace and equality, that a lot of people are constantly pissed off. Granted, there a lot of people who should be pissed off. However, if we stay focused on the process of making things better for the world as a whole, we can enjoy each other more.

It is easy for me, someone who lives a comfortable life to enjoy my present. However, I have plenty of friends who are equally comfortable, if not more so, and they are constantly pissed off and stressed about something.

How about in 2019 we as a world stop listening to people who feed our rage and do our part to continue to make our world better? I think we will create a better place for all of us to live and be a lot happier doing it.

I miss the headphone port, too.

Gotta admit. I might not feel as passionately as this guy, but I’m just about as annoyed. Apples ear buds just don’t fit my ears. I have some great wired Bang and Olufsen earbuds. They sound great. They are black. They fit my ears perfectly without discomfort or me having to mess with them to stay in. Now, I just listen to stuff on my iPad because it still has a headphone jack.

For a long time, advances in tech made things easier. Between Face ID and no headphone jack, using my phone is generally harder than it was before.

Being Grateful

I tried this for a little while. I even tried to get my kids to do a variant of it by telling me three things that made them happy periodically. However, I think it is a subset of mindfulness training. We are bombarded by so much crap in the world and with social media, it is easy to get bogged down in the shitty and forget things we should be thankful for.

I just try to put things in perspective. If I had a frustrating or stressful day, I try to keep in mind that I’m lucky that I have a house to go home to and a family that I love even if the kids drive me crazy sometimes. If we all could look at things with a different perspective, we might not be so angry online all the time.
